Generally it was just a worse playing version. SoR3 felt sloppier and unpolished in this respect as some attacks didn't connect or the way enemies reacted to certain hits is a bit off. The biggest failing however is in the mechanics. This fumbled the pacing quite a bit as some bosses took forever(bosses were already the weakest aspect of BK3 as they were prone to exploits) SoR3 had less enemies on screen but they took and did more damage(especially on the harder settings). I'm at the point where I'm thinking that the only way we're going to see a resurrection in the genre, is likely if the two who jump-started the genre in the first place, Million (aka Technos Japan) or especially Capcom, do something about it.Ĭapcom would only need to do something properly with the likes of Final Fight, or even better, something as epic as their D&D or AvP games, and they might have something on their hands. Now, besides perhaps the offhand, often utterly forced "mini-game" like Tekken Force, we're not seeing enough of the genre at all.

Generations of possible evolution have thus been squandered, as a result. The problem was that nobody really did a lot to keep this ball rolling that the likes of Sega, Treasure, Technos and Capcom started. Guardian Heroes (Saturn, Treasure), the Capcom D&D games (Saturn) and the various Kunio-kun brawlers were all games that I think were well suited for the console market, and added enough "console-friendly" things to make the games more than just a raw arcade experience.
